S c e n e 1
After Midnight
Three or four Rocket Art Orphans are chosen to go on the night
shift, to attend, monitor, collaborate with, help, talk to,
discuss ‘life’ and ‘art’ in three or four following situations.
Each Raketa Art Orphan will fi lm their experience and record
their discussions and must negotiate and document all procedure,
permissions, rejections and diffi culties.

Traffi c Cops in Stockholm
the orphan is to contact the police and explain these ideas about
the ‘night shift’ meanwhile arranging to accompany a police car
for an agreed period in the night. All events are possible.

Casualty/Emergency Department, Central Hospital
likewise the orphan is to contact and arrange to spend
some few hours after midnight in the Casualty Department,
and must be prepared to lend a lend where necessary.

Woman’s hostel, refuge, alcohol, de-tox, drug rehab centre
The orphan must gain access and spend the early morning
hours at such a centre recording all situations and helping
whenever sanctuary is needed or a domestic fl ares up.

Stockholm City: Advertisement Hoarding Changers
Negotiate with the city and accompany those workers
Contracted by the City of Stockholm who go around at night
and replace some of the big advertisements/billboards.

The Day
Café Rival, Stockholm
The Rocket Art Orphans experiencing the night shift then meet
up afterwards in Café Rival and decide in what way they can use
their experiences, share their fi lms and how they might edit them
into one fi lm or then counter this material with material and
documents from somewhere else.

Scene 3
Midnight
Nytorget
The Screening at Midnight in Nytorget at a date in the future to be agreed
between the city and The Rocket Art Institute. Preceded by the song
After Midnight by Eric Clapton, closed by as many versions that can be
found of Lou Reed’s song ‘Beautiful Day’.

– sätter en slags stämpel på – allt som visas i det offentliga rummet. Det
här hade fått avslag. En av de senaste nyheterna på sajten www.mizzima.com

Project Beyond Rangoon - Relief Trip 8
”… we gave pens, crayons and paper to the villagers of Poe Laung so they
could sit down and began to draw their experiences from the cyclone. This
served as both a therapeutic activity and something fun for their
children.”

Total relief items delivered on trip #8:
120 50-kilo bags of rice; 2 60-kilo bags of garlic; 2 60-bags of potatoes;

At 11:00 a.m. we reached the Mayan village. The elementary school had still
no roof and the broken bricks were still on the floor. We could not
understand why the government announced that the schools were reopened. But
the new academic year has started for Mayan children who have no school to
go to. Our group donated notebooks, pencils and snacks for those children.
And our volunteer doctor did some medical check-up for the villagers and
distributed medicines. Then, we left the village. On our way, the dead body
we saw last time was still in the field.

Dagsaktuell konst på Nytorget
Nu ska det debatteras nyheter på Södermalm. Det hoppas det svenska konstkollektivet Raketa och den danska konstnären Frank Franzen. Därför ställer de ut dagsaktuella nyhetstexter i anslutning till snabbproducerad konst på Nytorget fram till på lördag.

- Vi vill att folk ska reflektera över nyhetsflödet. Men vi vill också att en annan röst än reklambudskapen kommer fram i det offentliga rummet, säger konstnären Helena Byström.

Konstprojektet heter Night Shift och beskrivs av konstnärerna som ligger bakom det som en tillfällig alternativ tidning. Varje dag fram till på lördag kommer ett nytt "tidningsnummer" på den affischtavla som har ställts upp på Nytorget.

På tisdagen var affischtavlan svartmålad med de vita tryckbokstäverna: "It's not a question of freedom of speach". På baksidan var tre artiklar uppsatta från dagstidningarna Danska Politiken, New York Times - och DN.se. Samtliga texter handlade om måndagens bombdåd mot den danska ambassaden i Islamabad, Pakistan, där åtta personer dog.

I den danska artikeln försvaras de tidigare publiceringarna av den Muhammed-teckning som har väckt starka reaktioner hos vissa muslimska grupper.

-Bombdådet var en reaktion, om än extrem, på de bilder på Muhammed som har publicerats i Danmark. Danska medier fortsätter att försvara publiceringen av bilden med att landet har yttrandefrihet. Men det är fel sätt att argumentera, eftersom deras agerande har provocerat andra, säger Frank Franzen.Varje kväll träffas Night Shift-konstnärerna och har "redaktionsmöte" om vilka nyheter de ska belysa nästa dag. Klockan 10.00 på morgonen därpå görs konstverket om - på både fram- och baksida. - Vi vill visa att den tillfälliga konsten är lika viktig som den institutionella konsten, säger Helena Byström. - Night Shift är också ett statement för att Stockholm behöver ett sånt här offentligt ställe att uttrycka konst och åsikter på, säger Frank Franzen.

The project NIGHT SHIFT is a cooperation between raketa and the Danish
artist Frank Franzen. Night shift – a new platform in the public space, in
the shape of a temporary alternative newspaper with thirteen editions at
Nytorget in Stockholm during the period 31 May – 13 June 2008.

Every night a new work will be produced that comments the daily news – the
work will be put up the following morning at 10.00 o´clock and will then
bee shown for 24 hours.

With Night Shift we want to involve art in the social debate, and make
this visible and available for everyone moving in the city. Art works
fastly produced and instantly exposed, and follows the constant and ongoing
flow of news. At the same time as new art works is put on display on the
billboard at Nytorget, there will be a digital material distributed daily –
as a proposal starting-point for debate. It will also be possible to make
comments at a blog put up especially for the project.

Frank Franzen introduced Emergency Room together with Thierry Geoffroy
/Colonel in April 2006 in Nikolaj Exhibition Hall, Copenhagen Denmark.
Emergency Art ever since been shown in Emergency Room Berlin/Olaf Stüber
Gallery, Emergency Room New York/PS1 MoMA, and Emergency Room Athens/Ileana
Tounta Contemporary Art Center.

Emergency Art consists of three elements: daily episodes, critcal
situations and reflections and opinions from the artists. The artists from
Night Shifts will practice Emergency Art in the public space.
Night Shift team should consequently be very fast - in Stockholm,
Amsterdam, London, Beijing, New York, Islamabad,…
